Spartan Alliance Band to ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’

The Spartan Alliance Band of Homestead High School will compete for honors in Open Class A on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the On the Banks of the Wabash marching band festival at Bluffton High School.

Northrop will open Class A at 9:06 p.m., followed by Carroll at 9:19 p.m. and closing with Homestead at 9:32 p.m.

The host band will perform in exhibition at 9:45 p.m. An awards ceremony for Class A and Class B will close the festival at 9:58 p.m.

Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.

Programs will be available for purchase. Concession stands will be open at 1 Tiger Trail.

Other local bands competing include: Columbia City, 3:54; Wayne, 4:07; Huntington North, 4:20; Snider, 4:33; Whitko, 5:12; Norwell, 6:30; and Concordia, 6:56. In all, 24 bands will perform in competition or exhibition. For a full schedule, visit InFortWayne.com.

The Homestead band will compete next at the Mishawaka Penn Invitational on Sept. 24.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, Homestead will host the Homestead Fall Festival of bands. The first band will march at approximately 10 a.m., and the final band at about 5:30 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens. There will be 20-25 bands performing. This is the 38th annual Fall Festival of Bands at Homestead.

On Oct. 8, Homestead will host the Indiana State School Music Association Scholastic Class preliminaries and Open Class contest.

Steve Barber directs the Homestead band. Brad Wadkins is assistant band director.

Homestead’s 2016 show is entitled “Turn, Turn, Turn” with the music of Pete Seeger arranged by Kent Klee and additional original music by Kent Klee. Jon Bay wrote the drill design.

The band fields 287 students, including the color guard, drum majors (5), percussion (65) and winds (182). The drum majors are AshleyKate Brumett, Rachel Gripp, Caitlyn Klinepeter-Persing, Casey Murray and Brody Wadkins.

The Homestead band has qualified for 29 consecutive Indiana State Marching Band Finals. This year’s competition begins Oct. 15 at Lafayette Jeff High School. Qualifying Open Class A bands advance to the semistate Oct. 22 at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis and finally to the state finals Oct. 29 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Homestead also will compete in the Bands of America Super Regionals Nov. 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium, and the National Preliminaries Nov. 10, looking to qualify for the National Semifinals and Finals on Nov. 12.
