Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne sent more than 500 students, faculty, staff and alumni volunteers into the Fort Wayne community for the sixth annual BIG Event on Saturday, April 8.

The volunteers assisted about 40 nonprofit agencies with projects, including filing and office work and painting, landscaping and small-scale renovation projects.

“The BIG Event provides students with new and unique opportunities,” said Kasey Price, associate vice chancellor for Student Life and member of the planning committee. “Students have often found internships and employment opportunities that combine their academic and community service interests because of their participation in The BIG Event.”

The BIG Event is the largest one-day, student-led service project in the nation and has expanded to more than 75 universities across the country. IPFW was the first university to host the BIG Event in the state of Indiana in March 2012.
