Marilyn Hissong has been chosen to be the next superintendent of the East Allen County Schools.

The selection, announced July 10, has to proceed through a public hearing and final ratification by the EACS School Board. That timetable was unclear at the time of the announcement.

Hissong has been assistant superintendent for curriculum for four years. She has served in a number of roles in the school district for 24 years.

If the appointment is ratified, Hissong will succeed Ken Folks whose retirement was effective June 30. Folks had been superintendent for four years.

The School Board initially selected Doug Hicks as Folks’ successor. School Board President Robert Nelson said Hicks later met with him to step back from the top post. Hicks is the principal of East Allen University, which has achieved a 100 percent graduation rate and whose students earn college credit – even associate degrees – prior to graduation. Nelson said the school will have a new emphasis on technology this fall. Hicks enjoys the school and working closely with staff and students and wishes to remain in that capacity, Nelson said.

Hissong is a graduate of Woodlan High School and Ball State University. Both her children graduated from Leo High School.

Details of the School Board’s offer and the timetable of the public hearing will be posted on the district’s website.
