11 area bands advance in Open Class

Eleven northeast Indiana high school marching bands have advanced to the Oct. 28 Semistate round of the Indiana State School Music Association’s Open Class competition.

Open Class A and C bands competed Oct. 14 at the ISSMA Regional at Chesterton High School. Open Class B and D bands competed at Lafayette Jefferson High School.

The Class A Semistate will be held at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. Local bands performing: Homestead, 3:49 p.m.; Carroll, 4:15 p.m.

The Class B Semistate will be held at Pike High School in Indianapolis: Local bands advancing: East Noble, 3:49 p.m.; and DeKalb, 5:59 p.m. Huntington North also competed in Class B.

The Class C Semistate will be held at Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis. Local bands advancing: Class C: Norwell, 2:44 p.m.; Concordia Lutheran, 3:10 p.m.; Leo, 3:49 p.m.; and Angola, 4:28 p.m. Garrett also competed in Class C.

The Class D Semistate will be held at Franklin Community High School. Local bands advancing: Adams Central, 3:49 p.m.; Woodlan, 5:20 p.m.; and Whitko, 5:33 p.m. Eastside also competed in Class D.

Twenty bands compete at each Open Class Semistate. Ten from each site will advance to the Open Class Finals on Nov. 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The following bands will perform Oct. 21 in the ISSMA Scholastic Class Finals at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis, earning the trip by virtue of Gold ratings in Preliminary competitions Oct. 7. In Class B: Bluffton, 11:52 a.m.; Heritage, 12:57 p.m.; and Manchester, 1:23 p.m. In Class A: North Side, 5:43 p.m.; Snider, 8:06 p.m.; and Northrop, 8:45 p.m.

Admission to Scholastic Finals and Open Class Semistates is $7 for adults and $5 for students and preschoolers.

Four area bands also will march this weekend in the Bands of America Indianapolis Super Regional at Lucas Oil Stadium. Norwell performs at 10:15 a.m. Friday. Homestead performs at 4:45 p.m. Friday. Leo performs at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. Concordia Lutheran performs at 11:45 a.m. Saturday. In all, 68 bands from nine states will compete in the preliminary round, with 14 bands advancing to the Saturday evening finals round.
