Fort Wayne Council gives initial OK to North River purchase

The Fort Wayne City Council voted 5-4 to initially approve the purchase of the 29-acre North River property across from Science Central for $4.6 million.

All of those who voted in favor echoed the sentiment of Councilman John Crawford, who said, “This is not a good deal but it may be the best deal possible.”

They also complained about the secrecy surrounding the purchase agreement with the Rifkin family, which was reached a few months ago but only revealed to the council and the public a few weeks ago.

The agreement also required the City Council to approve an indemnification of the current owners from any costs, etc., related to the remediation of any possible environmental contamination, without allowing council members to see the results of environmental tests that had been conducted.
