DUPONT — Two new sections of the Pufferbelly Trail in Fort Wayne are estimated to open by the end of the year.
The section of trail from Ludwig Road to Washington Center Road is almost complete and work is in progress, according to a Nov. 1 news release from Fort Wayne Trails. It was scheduled to open to the public Nov. 16, according to the City of Fort Wayne.
Fort Wayne Trails assisted the City of Fort Wayne in receiving $1.7 million from the Regional Development Authority/Regional Cities to help fund the construction of the trail.
Construction continues on the Pufferbelly Trail below-grade crossing at Dupont Road, which will connect Salomon Farm Park to the existing trail north of Dupont via an underpass. The contractor and the City of Fort Wayne estimate that section will be open to the public by mid-December, along with a new trail and sidewalk on Dupont Road from Lima to Coldwater roads.
Once those sections of the Pufferbelly Trail are both completed, trail users will be able to travel uninterrupted from Life Bridge Church off of Corbin Road south 4.8 miles to Washington Center Road near the new Cookie Cottage location.
