Kate’s Kart is a not-for-profit organization that supplies free books to hospitalized children to keep for their enjoyment. Through the gifting of new books, Kate’s Kart strives to provide a distraction to children experiencing life in a hospital setting. Kate’s Kart was founded in 2008 by the Layman family in memory of their daughter, Katherine Anne Layman (affectionately known to family and friends as “Baby Kate”).
In just less than 11 years, the organization has grown to service 19 northeast Indiana hospitals via 29 book karts. A team of 100 volunteers, plus additional hospital staff, give away more than 3,500 brand new books every month to hurting, scared or bored children in the hospital. To date, more than 240,000 books have brought smiles, distraction and hope to hospitalized children and their families.
